Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of greenlight laser photoselective vaporization of prostate (PVP) for the treatment of aged patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Methods:33 aged patients were treated with 120 W greenlight high performance system laser. The operating time, post-operative catheterization time, complications, and preoperative/post-opretive serum sodium and hemoglobin were recorded. The international prostate symptom score (IPSS), quality of life (QOL) and maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) were measured. Results:All the operations were completed sucessfully. No patients suffered from transurethal resection syndrome and no blood transfusion was needed. No death happened. Mean operative time was (48.6±15.8) min. Mean postoperative catheterization time was (71.1±6.0) h. The serum sodium level and hemoglobin did not chang significantly. IPPS, QOL, and Qmax were remarkably improved. Conclusions:PVP is a safe and efficient procedure for aged patients with BPH, with its advantages of short operative time, less blood loss and rapid recovery.
