Efficacy of straight greenlight photoselective vaporesection of prostate vs. side light green laser vaporization of prostate in treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia

Abstract:Objective: To compare the efficacy of straight light greenlight photoselective vaporesection of the prostate (PVRP) and side light green laser vaporization of prostate (PVP) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods: From January 2017 to May 2019, the clinical data of 164 patients with BPH treated surgically were retrospectively reviewed, including 86 patients in PVRP group undergoing straight light photoselective vaporesection of the prostate and 78 patients in PVP group undergoing side light green laser vaporization of prostate. Clinical data were compared between the two groups, including the surgical indicators and complications after operation, as well as the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), quality of life (QOL), postvoid residual urine (PVR) and maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax). Results: The operation time was significantly shorter in RPVP group. There were no significant differences in blood loss, bladder irrigation time and indwelling catheter time after operation between two groups. After operation, the Qmax, IPSS, QOL and PVR were significantly improved as compared with those preoperation (P < 0.05). But there was no significant difference between two groups after operation (P > 0.05). All patients had no blood transfusion or reoperation, and the incidence of urinary incontinence was low. Conclusions: PVRP and PVP are safe and efficient procedures for the treatment of BPH. PVRP has the advantages of shorter operation time, and it is worthy of clinical application.
