Curative effectiveness of transurethral resection of prostate vs. 160 W green-light high performance system laser for photo-selective vaporization of prostate in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the clinical effect and safety of transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) vs. 160 W green-light high performance system (HPS) laser for photo-selective vaporization of prostate (PVP) in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods: 100 patients with BPH were chosen, and divided into the observation group (PVP, n=41) and control group (TURP, n=59) according to the operative approaches, then the operation situation and clinical curative effect of the two groups were compared. Results: There was no significant difference in the operation time between two groups (P>0.05). The intra-operative blood loss, bladder catheterization duration, bladder irrigation time and the average hospitalization time were decreased significantly (P<0.05) in the observation group as compared with the control group. The I-PSS, QOL and Qmax of the two groups after operation were significantly improved as compared with those before operation (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between two groups (P>0.05). Conclusions: The 160 W green-light HPS laser for PVP in the treatment of BPH was equally effective to and safer than TURP.
