Abstract:Objective: To analyze the surgical outcome and complications of the treatment of upper ureteral calculi with ureteroscopy holmium laser surgery assisted by N-Trap and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Methods: Ninety-two cases of upper ureteral calculi were treated with ureteroscopy holmium laser surgery assisted by N-Trap and PCNL. A further comparison of calculus clearance rate, post-operative length of stays, and occurrence rate of complications was carried out. Results: The treatment method could be tolerated by all patients without serious complications. Calculus clearance rate and complication occurrence rate in patients treated with PCNL and ureteroscopy holmium laser surgery were 97.7% and 93.8%, 15.6% and 2.1%, respectively. Conclusions: The treatment method of ureteroscopy holmium laser surgery assisted by N-Trap was characterized by mild trauma and quick recovery. As to calculus clearance, the method was more suitable for the sort of calculus at a lower position and with smaller diameter. And PCNL was more suitable for calculus at a higher position; however, it tended to cause larger trauma and higher occurrence rate of complications.
