Abstract:Laparoscopic technique is widely spread in urology because of less blood lose, short hospital stay and cosmetic benefit, comparing with traditional open surgery. However, the conventional laparoscopy uses 5 or 10 mm Trocars for surgery and the bleeding, hernia and scars related to multiple Trocar ports are noted by most of urologists. Thus laparoendoscopic single-site surgery(LESS) was introduced to urology. However the cosmetic merit lose for retroperitoneal LESS because retroperitoneal laparoscopy is dominant in China. At the same time, changes of operating habits, collision of instruments also limit the spread of LESS in urology. Small incision access retroperitoneoscopic technique (SMART) decreases the complications of bleeding and hernia related to big Trocars by using 3 mm Trocar; it also avoids the big incision for LESS platform in procedure with small specimen retrieval to fulfill the cosmetic requirement; meanwhile SMART has less effect on surgeons by keeping the operative habit of conventional laparoscopy. The development and application of SMART is overviewed in this paper.
