Abstract:Objective: To explore the clinical experience of transurethral 980 nm diode laser enucleation of the prostate (DiLEP) for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods: A group of 25 cases treated with DiLEP and a matched group of 25 cases treated with Bipolar transurethral plasma kinetic prostatectomy (TUPKP) during December 2016 and December 2017 were retrospectively studied. Patients' age, prostate volume, preoperative blood hemoglobin (Hb), postoperative blood Hb, maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax), operation time, irrigation fluid volume, and length of catheterization and postoperative hospital stay were evaluated. The intra-and postoperative complications were also analyzed. Results: No significant differences were found in terms of prostate volume, Qmax, PVR and age between two groups (P>0.05). Patients in DiLEP group had smaller irrigation fluid volume and shorter length of operation, bladder irrigation, catheterization and postoperative hospital stay than in TUPKP group (P<0.05). Hb was reexamined on the second day after surgery, and Hb changes were statistically different between two groups before and after surgery (P<0.05). Postoperative complications occurred in 2 cases of DiLEP group, and in 9 cases of TUPKP group. No intraoperative complications were found in both groups. Conclusions: DiLEP is a safe and effective procedure for the treatment of BPH, with its advantages of less bleeding, shorter length of operation and hospital stay. However, randomized controlled studies with larger samples are needed to further investigate the long-term efficacy of DiLEP.
