Abstract:Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common disease in older males. Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is regarded as the “gold standard” for the treatment of BPH. Over the last decade, there have been efforts to identify new technologies that can replicate the effectiveness of TURP but with an improved safety profile. PROCEPT BioRobotics (California, United States) combined novel minimally invasive water ablation therapy, image guidance and robotics to invent AquaBeam “Prostate Waterjet Robotic Surgical System”, which uses high-speed sterile saline jet as the cutting medium to automatically complete prostate cutting and removal. Since 2015, the safety of the Transurethral Robotic Waterjet Resection” (Aquablation) using AquaBeam was preliminarily verified. The system is the unique urology-specific surgical robot that has been certificated by the USA FDA and Euro CE, and has been included in the latest version of Guidelines for the treatment of BPH in the American Urological Association (AUA) and European Association of Urology (EAU). In this article, we will focus on the characteristics, clinical applications, and related research of this technology.
