Abstract:Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics of 15 cases of adrenal ganglioneuroma and to evaluate the safety and outcome of retroperitoneal laparoscopic treatment. Methods: From March 2006 to March 2016, 15 patients with adrenal ganglioneuroma underwent retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgical treatment in Shanghai Changzheng Hospital. A three-trocar retroperitoneal approach was used. There were 12 males and 3 females with mean age of 39 years old. Six tumors were located in the right side, and 9 tumors in the left. The maximum diameter of tumor was 2.5 cm to 11.0 cm (mean 5.8±2.3 cm). Results: Fifteen cases of retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgical operations were performed successfully, and there were no conversions to open surgery. Mean operation time was (104.6±40.6) min, mean intraoperative blood loss was (45.3±20.4) mL, mean time of postoperative bowel function recovery was (1.5±0.4) days, and mean postoperative hospital stay was (7.2±0.5) days. No perioperative complications occurred. All cases of postoperative pathological diagnoses were adrenal ganglioneuroma. During a follow-up period of 1 month to 96 months, no tumor recurrence or distant metastasis was found. Conclusions: Adrenal ganglioneuroma is a rare disease with specific imaging features. For <6 cm tumor, retroperitoneal laparoscopic resection is a safe and effective treatment. For >6 cm tumor, more surgical experience and operative skills are needed.
