Abstract:Robot-assisted retroperitoneal partial nephrectomy was developed in recent years. Compared with transperitoneal approach, retroperitoneal approach is more suitable for the patients with peritonitis or abdominal surgery history. It is also easier to manage the posterior or upper pole renal masses via retroperitoneal approach, for renal artery can be dissected and exposed more directly without increasing injury risk of intestines, liver, spleen and other abdominal organs, which can significantly shorten operative time. Due to combination of the advantages of retroperitoneal approach and robotic system, robot-assisted retroperitoneal partial nephrectomy has been incresingly reported in recent five years. With accumulation of the surgical experience, robot-assisted retroperitoneal partial nephrectomy will be the preferred surgical approach for posterior or upper pole renal masses.
