Comparison of high power green light laser vaporization resection vs. transurethral resection of the prostate in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia

Abstract:Objective: To compare the effect of transurethral green laser vaporization resection of the prostate vs. transurethral resection of the prostate in the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Methods: From January 2015 to December 2016, the clinical data of 246 patients diagnosed with BPH treated surgically (including 107 patients in control group undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate and 139 patients in experimental group undergoing transurethral green light laser vaporization resection of the prostate) were retrospectively reviewed. The operation time, intro-operative blood loss, complication rate, catheterization time, bladder irrigation time, hospital stay, 1-month post-operative Qmax, IPSS and QOL were compared between two groups. Results: As compared with the control group, 1-month post-operative Qmax, IPSS and QOL in the experimental group showed no significant change. The operation time was shorter, intro-operative blood loss was less, complication rate was lower, and catheterization time, bladder irrigation time and hospital stay were shorter in the experimental group than in the control group. Conclusions: Transurethral green light laser vaporization resection is as effective as transurethral resection of the prostate in the treatment of BPH, but is significantly safer than transurethral resection of the prostate.
