Abstract:Objective: To investigate the cause and prevention for the iatrogenic injuries of ureter during rigid ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy. Methods: All 302 cases undergoing transurethral rigid ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy in department of urology, Beijing Longfu Hospital, during July 2005 to November 2015, 6 cases developing iatrogenic ureteral injuries were retrospectively analyzed. Results: There were 4 cases of ureteral perforation, of which 3 were transformed to open operation, treated with end-to-end ureteral anastomosis, and 1 was ended with indwelling double-J ureteral stents and undergoing ESWL as a subsequent treatment. There was 1 case developing avulsion of ureteral mucosa, which was transformed to open operation, treated with anastomosis of ureter andbladderflap. There was 1 case developing ureterovesicaljunction stenosis, treated with vesico-ureteral reimplantation. Conclusions: The experience and surgical technique of a surgeon can significantly affect the incidence of iatrogenic injuries of ureter after rigid ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy. Deepening understanding of such injuries, enhancing skill training, trying to use more advanced equipment may be the key point to reduce ureteral injuries and ensure the success of such surgery.
