Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of transurethral resection in the treatment of adult intravesical ureterocele. Methods: The clinical data of 18 cases (6 men and 12 women, aged from 18 to 42 year-old) of adult intravesical ureterocele who underwent transurethral resection of ureterocele were retrospectively analyzed. All the diagnoses were made by ultrasonography, IVU and cystoscopy before operation. Seven cases were given transurethral resection of total ureterocele, while the rest 11 cases were subjected to partial resection. Results: In the 18 cases, 17 cases obtained successful results by single stage surgery. The mean operative time and hospital stay were 25 min and 5.5 days respectively. Follow-up ranged from 6 to 24 mouths with regular ultrasonography and cystography. One case underwent second-stage anti-reflux surgery because of repeated pyelonephritis caused by vesicoureteral reflux. Conclusions: Transurethral resection can be considered as the first choice for treatment of intravesical ureterocele whose diameter is not bigger than 3 cm and leading to upper urinary obstruction, and open surgery should be performed for those bigger than 5 cm or ectopic ureterocele.
