Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the safety and efficacy of retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of adrenal cysts. Methods:A total of 22 patients with adrenal cysts were treated with retroperitoneal laparoscopic operation from May 2002 to July 2011. The diameters of cysts ranged from 2.0 cm to 12.7 cm, and the mean diameter was 5.9 cm. Results:The procedure was completed successfully in all cases.21 patients were diagnosed with a unilateral cyst, and 1 patient with bilateral ones. Mean operative time was 99 min (range, 50-190 min) and mean blood loss was 32 ml (range, 10-200 ml).The mean postoperative hospital stay was 6.8 days (range, 3-32 days). During hospitalization, venous thrombosis of the lower extremity occurred in one patient who was cured later. Perirenal drainage tubes were placed for 3-9 days and the mean time was 4.5 days. Patients were followed up for 8-118 months (mean, 45 months) without cyst recurrence. Conclusions:Retroperitoneal laparoscopic surgery for adrenal cysts is a safe, effective, less invasive method for adrenal cysts and can be easy to learn.
