Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the safety and efficacy of ureteral catheter placement during pneumatic lithotripsy for proximal ureteral stones. Methods:From January 2011 to December 2013, 67 patients with proximal ureteral stones were treated with ureteroscopic pneumatic lithotripsy. They were divided into two groups, ureteral catheter assisted group (20 cases) and conventional therapy group (47 cases), in terms of ureteral catheter placement during lithotripsy. Results:There was no significant difference between the two groups with regard to operative time and complication rate. Stone-free rate in ureteral catheter placement group was significantly higher than in conventional therapy group (100% vs. 76.6%, χ2=5.6, P=0.026). Conclusions:The placement of ureteral catheter is valuable during ureteroscopic pneumatic lithotripsy for management of proximal ureteral stones, which is accompanied with a higher stone-free rate without compromising the operative time and safety.
